Interview Joel Winter

Profession: Chief/Lead Technician

Name: Joel Winter
Working at iPS | Nautech since: 2020

When did you start in the industry you are working in and why did you choose this work field?

I’ve been working offshore in the oil and gas industry for 15 years since the age of 19. I initially started offshore for my love of traveling and for the 6 months holiday each year 🙂

What is your current role and on which role did you start?

Chief/Lead Technician. I started as a trainee Observer with CGG.

When did you get in touch with Nautech?

I transitioned from towed streamer to OBN when I started working in the GOM 2 years ago. Nautech was the obvious choice of agency.

Can you tell us more about your rotations you did?

I’ve worked solidly with Nautech, roughly 6 weeks on a off. Crew changes out of Houston, New Orleans and now Rio De Janeiro.

Can you tell us more about what kind of projects you were involved in via Nautech?

With Nautech I’ve mostly been based in Gulf Of Mexico, working on some exciting and challenging OBN surveys. I’ve also been part of R&D surveys for new, cutting-edge seismic technologies with Shell and Sercel. Now I’m working in Brazil with Petrobras.

If you should explain the contact you have with Nautech, how would you describe it?

All my dealings with Nautech have been fantastic. When I query via email, I get a reply quickly. Call and the phone is answered. They are always actively searching for work for me, which has meant I am always busy and offshore when I want to be. I mainly deal with Rukhanna Harvey from the Jersey office and her level of expertise and communication is 5 star.

What do you find the most inspiring aspect of your work/job?

At just 34 and with already 6 years Chief / Team management experience, I’m a young and well experienced crew member offshore. My level of experience in seismic, dynamic work ethic and fresh perspective highly benefits and impacts offshore operations. I love being part of the survey decision making, training new people, and helping colleagues to really enjoy the offshore lifestyle and work environment.
